You may love her. You may dislike her. You may not know her. But this book has really struck a cord with us.
The amazing thing about Karren Brady is that she is all about empowering women, particularly women in business.
In one of her opening paragraphs, she says: “...the description I think suits me best, more than chairperson, vice-chairperson or CEO, is working mother. That is what I am–a mother who works. My work and my children are the most important things in my life. But I am still aware every day that having a career and having children is bloody hard.
“Anybody who says it’s easy either has an awful lot of support or a very different attitude to guilt than most other mothers. Looking back, the one thing I do find is that because of everything I’ve been juggling all their lives, sometimes it feels that everything merges into one. I do feel sad about that and, yes, there are moments when I think I’m a terrible mother. All mothers feel some guilt at some time, but most of us know it’s pointless. In fact, rationalising it, I can’t understand what the guilt is about.”
Brady also talks about the fact that she won’t invest in businesses where there are no women on the board and we at WorkingMamas headquarters couldn’t agree more!
Finally (as though Brady has read our minds), she also emphasises one of the main reasons why women are sometimes held back in their career - affordable good quality childcare!!
Here at WorkingMamas, this is something we are passionate about and Brady is a real champion for this. If you want to feel inspired or be inspired then we highly recommend reading Brady’s story.
